                   Land-use trends of NJ

-NJ is losing 31 footbal fields (ff) a day to development

which is roughly 15,000 acres a year

- The State loses 19 ff a day of farmland (9050 ff a year)

-NJ will be the 1st state to reach "Build-out"

   in approx. 35-40 years

(where all land is either built or preserved upon)

Note: Acres have been converted to football fields to envision how large an acres is

          Land-use of

          Hammonton

                     Hammonton currently has:

-6,625 ff of total farmland (8,745 acres)

-5,564 ff of unpreserved farmland (7,345 acres)

-1,061 ff of preserved farmland (1,400 acres)

Note: Acres have been converted to football fields to envision how

large an acres is.

The 3 Options

-You can't expect all 5,564 ff to become developed or preserved. Options 1 & 3 are the extremes.

-Option 2 might best reflect what is likely to occur within the next 30 years.

1 -all remaining farmland becomes developed

                   -1,061 of total farms preserved

     2 -Some development-some preservation

-3,843 ff of total farms preserved

3 -4,173 ff (or 3/4) of remaining farms preserve themselves

-5,234 ff of total farms preserved

Hammonton is seen in the upper left hand portion of the map. As you can see, Hammonton has the most farmland per municipality in the County and one of the largest pieces of conservation lands (the Pinelands a.k.a. Wharton State Forest)

Leapfrog Development targets farmlands. Leads to less farms and more traffic. Farmland preservation is vital for Hammonton to continue being a sustainable town for generations to come. Once farmland is developed, it is unlikely to ever undevelop. For more info, checkout

There are however, sustainable development practices such as infilling and retrofitting that utilize exisiting infrastructure and services without the need to build on the outskirts of town. Checkout http://njssi.org/ for more info.
